Internal Name hydrogenosome

A work horse of the cell found in many species. Hydrogenosomes perform Clostridial Fermentation, a form of Anaerobic Respiration. It is the conversion of Glucose glucose into ATP atp. It is a membrane-bound equivalent of Hydrogenase, and currently serves as the only anaerobic glucose-burning eukaryotic part.

Requirements

A cell must have a Nucleus to evolve Hydrogenosomes.

If organelle unlocks are enabled in game settings, the organelle can be unlocked without endosymbiosis once the following condition is met for the player cell:

  • Contains at least 4 Hydrogenase for at least 5 generations in a row.
  • Produces at least +10 ATP atp.

Processes

Clostridial Fermentation: Glucose glucoseATP atp

A method of energy production, without requiring Oxygen oxygen. It is more efficient at this process than Hydrogenase, but when a reasonable amount of Oxygen oxygen is present, it is inferior to a Mitochondrion. Requires a steady influx of Glucose glucose.

Modifications

No modifications.

Effects

No effects.

Upgrades

No upgrades.

Strategy

In environments with plentiful Glucose glucose, Hydrogenosomes provide a steady stream of energy. Be aware though that Glucose glucose concentrations decrease as the game progresses, so we recommend adding additional energy sources if possible.

We also recommend replacing Hydrogenases with Hydrogenosomes after evolving a Nucleus for far greater efficiency.

Scientific Background

Hydrogenosomes are believed to have evolved from mitochondria, adapting to cope with low oxygen levels. Like mitochondria, they can have various shapes, appearing in spheroid or dumbell shapes.
