Planet

A planet is a large, rounded astronomical body that is neither a star nor its remnant.

Geology

As a general rule, bigger terrestrial planets will have a stronger tectonic activity: for the square-cube law, a bigger planet has a smaller surface relatively to its volume, and therefore leaks away less internal heat. It should have a large molten core rich in metals and radioactive elements (which release more heat), a thick mantle and a thin, brittle crust that is easily cracked by mantle convection. A large presence of water in the crust also contributes to tectonic activity, lubricating plates and making rocks more pliable.

Terran Planet

Main Article: Terran Planet

A Terran Planet is a Planet Template that mimics Earth. Terran Planets will follow Earth's history in how they are first formed, the first few geological events they face, and how life evolves on them. It is the template we will use to initially generate planets and design our game, until we have enough content in the game and enough knowledge on the team to start simulating more exotic and alien planet templates.

Some characteristics of a Terran Planet include:

  • An initially nitrogen and carbon dioxide filled atmosphere
  • Mostly silicate rocks and a metallic core (which creates a planetary magnetic field)
  • Liquid water oceans
  • One moon
  • Carbon-based life originating near hydrothermal vents
  • An eventual Great Oxygenation Event

Sulfur Planet

A planet with a significant amount of sulfur and its derived compounds.

Chlorine Planet

A planet with a significant amount of chlorine and its derived compounds.
