Ammonia (represented in-game using the symbol ammonia) is a compound that can be found in the environment in the Microbe Stage. It can also be produced using gaseous Nitrogen by microbes with the Nitrogenase or Nitroplast organelles. Along with Phosphates, it is an essential resource for synthesizing DNA and enabling the player to access the Microbe Editor.

Scientific Background

Ammonia is a colorless gas with a strong, characteristically acrid odor. It is represented using the chemical formula NH3. While it is not flammable in its pure form, it can become flammable or even explosive when mixed with air at certain concentrations.

Ammonia can be found in many planetary environments, and even in the interstellar medium. On Earth, it is also produced biologically by certain nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which take atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) and integrate it into ammonia. This is a critical process for life on Earth more broadly, as nitrogen is an essential component of DNA and proteins, and gaseous nitrogen is far more difficult to utilize than ammonia for most organisms.
